Scammers contact individuals through smishing tactics and act as a “financial institution.”
A smishing scam is when a scammer creates a text message that looks like it could be from a financial institution or business. They use this tactic to gain your trust and trick you into revealing sensitive information over the phone or by clicking on a link.
Here are ways to protect your financial information
Be Vigilant!
If you receive a call, text, or email that is suspicious and asks you to provide sensitive information or pressures you to act quickly, do not comply with the request. Instead, delete the message, contact your institution directly, and if it is a scam, report it.
Don’t Trust Caller ID!
Scammers can make any number appear on your caller ID. If someone contacts you unsolicited, proceed with caution – even if it seems legit. We recommend hanging up and calling the number directly.
Monitor Your Accounts!
Check your financial accounts often to ensure all transactions are accurate. Generations United online and mobile banking are available at all hours to verify your transaction history. While you’re in online and mobile banking, you can also check your credit score which can alert you of any suspicious activity.
Be proactive!
There are simple things you can do to add an additional layer of security, such as enabling two-factor authentication for sign-in, creating a PIN for debit/credit cards, and staying educated by learning about the latest scams on our website.
Remember!
If anyone reaches out to you unsolicited and asks you to provide personal and financial information that will help them gain access to your accounts, such as:
- Online and Mobile Banking passwords
- Two-factor Authentication codes
- Personal Identification Numbers (PINs)
- Social Security numbers
- Bank Account numbers
It is likely a scammer. Do not respond or click; instead, reach out to Generations United FCU. If you need account assistance, please contact us at (646) 422-7275.
